Caversham – Local area guide

In the suburb of Reading, Caversham provides a wide range of local shops, restaurants and fun activities. Being within walking distance from the Reading train station makes Caversham a highly desirable area to live in for commuters.  

Shops and Restaurants

Caversham has a lot to offer when it comes to dining out, there’re many restaurants, pubs and takeaways along Church Street, Prospect Street and Caversham Road offering Italian, Indian, Greek, British, Nepalese and Spanish cuisines.

There’s also a wide selection of grocery shops including independent shops as well as biggest market chains such as Waitrose, Aldi, Co-Op or Tesco.

Nice areas / Local interests

Caversham is a beautiful place surrounded by green space, scenic paths alongside the Thames river, Caversham Lakes as well as a Balmore walk path through woodlands are perfect routes for longer walks and bike rides.

Additionally, there’s many parks around the Caversham area – including Caversham Court Gardens by the Thames river that won the Green Flag Award – that make excellent spots for dog walks.

Caversham is also a home to one of the UK’s biggest annual music festivals – Reading Festival, brings the performances of the biggest music stars to the local area.

For the family

Mapledurham Estate comprising the main house, a watermill and St Margaret’s Church that has existed since the Norman times is ideal for a day out with the family. Mapledurham Estate has a lot of history and often organises exhibitions of historic collections, food festivals and other events such as WW2 reenactments.  

Thames Rivercruises are excellent for relaxing family outings and provide a great introduction to the natural beauty of the River Thames.

For a more active day out with the kids there’s a Red Kangaroo Trampoline Park situated on the outskirts of Caversham as well as Delta Force Paintball.

Health & Fitness

Golf:

For golf enthusiasts there are 3 golf courses in the area. Reading Golf Club being the closest one to the Reading city centre and Caversham Heath Golf Club and Mapledurham Golf Club being slightly further out but still within the RG4 postcode.

Gyms:

There’s plenty of facilities in the area that make staying active easy. Places like Rivermead Leisure Complex, Caversham Health & Fitness club offer a gym, fitness classes including yoga and zumba, squash and personal training.  

Additionally, there’s two indoor swimming pools at the Rivermead Leisure Complex and Revive Health Club.

Outdoors:

For those outdoors activities there’s a Reading Rowing club in the beautiful area by the Thames river that offer rowing courses for juniors and adults as well as offering opportunities to join their competitive rowing teams for the more advanced athletes. Locally, Isis Water-Ski & Wakeboard Club situated by the secluded and peaceful Caversham Lakes, offers water skiing and wakeboarding activities.

Island Bohemian Bowls Club is located on a scenic island located in the middle of the Thames where it flows near the centre of Reading, the island can only be accessed by boat. It is a beautiful location perfect for a game of bowls on a sunny day. The club also offers social events and activities for its members throughout the year.

Getting around

Reading train station is within walking distance from Caversham. Frequent trains allow you to travel to London Paddington and Oxford in about 30 minutes as well as to London Waterloo in just over an hour.  

Direct A4074 route leading from Caversham, allows you to drive to Oxford in about 45 minutes.
